(Warning: This blog mention some current events and that the SWITCH 2 IS FINALLY REAL!!!!)
Man, I picked a really bad time to get off the Internet this week thanks to my fear of possible discourse (and the horror) of whatever Trump is going to do after his Inauguration next week. I said that because two big things were announced this past week.
First of all is that yesterday afternoon, Israel and the Hamas has announced that they FINALLY reached a ceasefire deal! This means it’ll end the horrible the war that’s been taking place in the Gaza Strip in the past 15 months! But something tells me to not celebrate just yet…
Second is that on Monday, there’s rumors that Nintendo will make an announcement later this week about the Nintendo Switch 2, thanks to some guy’s podcast. Of course, I usually take that as a grain of salt as people always like to make predictions on what Nintendo announce, all the time.
But it doesn’t help that in the past few months, people have been leaking images of what could be the Switch 2 on the Internet. Such as what it looks like, what type of internal hardware components they have, etc. etc. I think because of those leaks, I feel like Nintendo might have no choice but to make a trailer for the Switch 2, just to keep everyone off their asses for a little longer as they promise to make an announcement of the Switch 2 by the end of March 2025 (which is two months from now).
So what I didn’t expect that not only that guy’s prediction to be correct, but that Nintendo actually shadowdropped the trailer. THIS MORNING!!!
Like, I didn’t know they even did that until I was reading one of my many video game news sites when I saw the headline mentioning the Switch 2! Once again, I took this with a grain of salt and kept scrolling down until I got to an article that has the trailer in it.
It turns out the trailer is what the leaked images has already been confirmed. That it looks like the original console, but the screen is bigger and that it has a longer stand with a wider tilt. That the Joy-Con controllers are bigger, that they’re now connected with a powerful magnet, that there’s an extra button on one of the Joy-Con and that it has a black appearance with the color under the sticks. Probably did that to separate from the first Switch.
Along with announcing the name the Switch 2 (as Nintendo didn’t want to make the same mistake they did in 2011 when they announced the Wii U [which end up flopping badly]), there was a brief glimpse of a new Mario Kart game (it is Mario Kart 9 that they announced back in 2022?), where it looks like the characters has new designs, is on a new course and that there might be 24 racers per race. God, 24 racers on Baby Park is going to be a NIGHTMARE if it’s confirmed to be true!
And lastly, they announced that there’s an actual Nintendo Direct. Which will take place on April 2nd (Got my blog ready to go on that!). Probably going to announce more details of the Switch 2, how much it’s going to cost (I say at least $300-400 due to the Switch 2 being bigger and using better hardware) and what games they’re going to release on the system. So I won’t be shocked if Metroid Prime 4 is the Switch 2 launch title. Do that and Nintendo is guarantee to make millions this year.
But the surprised announcement didn’t stop some from complaining about its boring, colorless appearance and that the new Joy-Cons looks breakable. That the numerous leaks ruined the hype and Nintendo's silence over them made it worst. Then there's the fact they only show one game, didn't help either. Another thing is that most see the Switch 2 is nothing but an expensive and improved version of the Switch. And lastly, we have to wait THREE MONTHS for an actual Direct, which doesn't sit right with many! The mixed reaction to the trailer is so big, many wants the Switch 2 to FAIL because of it! Yikes! It looks like you can’t please everyone, I guess...?
Now you’re wondering that after all this, will I be getting the Switch 2? Not really. This is because not only I’m too broke to get one, but my current Switch (that I got as a Christmas gift back in 2018) still works. Yeah, I had to replace the left Joy-Con once due to drifting. But as long the battery still works whenever I’m on handheld mode, I’ll be keeping my Switch for a little longer.
But when I do eventually get the Switch 2, at least I can transfer my game files from my original Switch as it’s confirmed to be backward compatibility, which is nice. So now some of the Switch games will run better on the Switch 2 than on the current Switch console. But not all of the games will work as the trailer mention. If anyone is worried, it’s probably the gimmicky physical games such as Fit Ring Adventure and the Nintendo Labo series.
At the end, I’m glad Nintendo finally release the trailer in hoping to stop the leakers and to keep everyone off their back for the next few months. Now we must wait until the April 2nd Nintendo Direct to see if the Switch 2 is a hit or a miss (which based on the mixed reaction above so far, it's looking like a miss).
If it does end up as a miss, then it looks like Nintendo is going back to the Dark Ages again. And nobody wants that.
